An experimental research project on intangible heritage
The multimedia research project ‘Notre-Dame: Transformations’ was born in the context of the exhibition ‘Notre-Dame de Paris, l’Art de la Charpente’, a partnership between the Compagnons du Devoir and the École de Chaillot, Paris, France.
At the heart of this collaborative project, ‘Notre-Dame: Transformations’ is a collection of testimonies from ‘chaillotins’ and ‘itinerants’ Compagnons du Devoir, put into form and to music by James White (Chaillot student, 2019-2020), with invaluable contributions and support from the participants and the scientific and educational team of the ‘Notre-Dame de Paris, l’Art de la Charpente’ project.
The title ‘Transformations’ is a reference to the trainings – ‘formations’ in french’ – at Chaillot and at the Compagnons, which intersect in the fertile knowledge-sharing of ‘Notre-Dame de Paris, l’Art de la Charpente’, as well as to the many material transformations of Notre-Dame Cathedral over the ages, the most recent of which our generation is witnessing (and participating in) following the fire of April 15, 2019.
